Fiji releases new dollar coin

11:59 am on 4 October 2011

The Fiji Reserve Bank is to release a one dollar coin next week.

The deputy governor of the bank, Inia Naiyaga, says the new coin has the same designs as the old dollar but it's thinner and lighter, and is part of the series of 5, 10, 20 and 50 cent coins introduced in February last year.

He says the one dollar coins were to be released in 2009, but the Bank wanted to deplete the stocks of the old coins first.

The bank says the new coins have tested and are compliant with digital parking meters.

It says other vending machines will continue to accept the old coins and they'll gradually be calibrated to accept the new ones.
