Fiji's Laisenia Qarase pleads not guilty to abuse of office charges

The ousted Fiji prime minister Laisenia Qarase has appeared in court and pleaded not guilty to abuse of office charges.

Fiji Broadcasting reports his trial has been set for the 22nd of November.

The charges were brought by Fiji's Independent Commission against Corruption in 2008.

Mr Qarase is charged with six counts of abuse of office and three counts relating to discharge of duty.

The allegations, involving illicit share trading, date back to 1992 when Mr Qarase was a director of Fiji Holdings Limited.
