Thirty detainees, are on the loose after escaping from the Jomba Police cells in Papua New Guinea's Madang province.

The Post Courier reports that 11 of the escapees are charged with crimes including rape, murder, possession of firearms and ammunition.

The escape has resulted in the suspension of four police officers, including the supervisor.

Madang Police Commander Superintendant Anthony Wagambie Jnr says the detainees escaped through a gap created by a faulty welding job done in the cell block.

Superintendant Wagambie says the incident has highlighted the need for police to start enlisting reservists.

He says while the police force has been recruiting new officers, it still was insufficient.
