Queues create frustration in first round of voting in Kiribati

2:30 pm on 21 October 2011

There have been complaints that voting is going slowly at polling stations in Betio in Kiribati.

Kiribati is holding the first round of its parliamentry elections today.

Megan Whelan is there.

"Some people in Betio are waiting up to an hour to vote in cues to vote. At the same time there has been disputes over the order of the ballot papers for Betio, which picks three MPs. But the electoral office says ballot papers are printed in alphabetical order. Elsewhere voting is going smoothly with most places having only short cues. Results from today's first round of voting are expected to be known tomorrow morning."
