UN call for better family planning in Pacific

4:59 am on 31 October 2011

The Director of the UN Population Fund in the Pacific, Dirk Jena, says there needs to be better engagement with church and village leaders in order to get the family planning message across in the region.

His comments come as the population of the region marks the ten million milestone.

Mr Jena says after 40 years of family planning programmes in the region, there are still questions as to why contraceptive uptake remains low.

"In fact all the Christian and the other denominations in the Pacific we would like to have a broad-based partnership with them to cover issues of sexual reproductive health in the broadest way to the betterment of the families."
