Amnesty International says the Indonesian government must immediately act on findings that human rights violations were committed by Indonesian security forces during last month's congress in Papua.
A team from the Indonesian National Human Rights Commission, Komnas HAM, found a range of human rights violations allegedly committed by the Indonesian security forces.
This included firing on participants of the peaceful gathering and beating and kicking them.
The Commission has called on the Indonesian National Police chief to investigate these human rights violations but the government has rejected the findings, stating that the police are still handling the case.
But Amnesty International says the Indonesian authorities must initiate an independent, thorough and effective investigation into the Commission's findings.
It says, if proven, then those responsible must be prosecuted in proceedings that meet international standards of fairness, and victims must be given reparations.
