Papua New Guinea police say six prisoners who escaped from police custody in Popondetta in Oro Province early last week are stilll at large but five have been recaptured.

Acting assistant commissioner, Jerry Frank, says four had surrendered and one was shot by police and recaptured.

Police say they believe the men broke out of the police cells after a hack saw blade was smuggled in by relatives of one of the inmates.

Mr Frank says at the time police were short of food rations and relatives were allowed to bring in food for the detainees.

He says he's confident the remaining six prisoners will be soon be recaptured.
