Six MPs vie for Solomon Islands prime ministership

6:25 am on 14 November 2011

Six Solomon Islands MPs have been nominated as candidates for Wednesday's election of a new prime minister.

This follows last Friday's resignation of Danny Philip who quit as he was poised to lose a no confidence vote amid allegations of misuse of funds - 15 months into his four-year term.

Among the candidates are a former prime minister, Manasseh Sogavare, and three of Mr Philip's ministers, including Gordon Darcy Lilo, who held the finance portfolio until he was sacked last week.

Our correspondent says there appears to be no favourite for the top post.

Since independence in 1978, only one Solomon Islands prime minister served a full term.
