American Samoa eyes new veteran affairs department

American Samoa's governor, Togiola Tulafono, is looking at establishing a new department of veteran and military affairs.

The new agency would oversee all issues affecting veterans and those still in the U.S. armed forces.

Togiola also says this department could help address some of the conflicts that have arisen between the government and veterans.

The governor says it could also ensure that all government assets given to veterans are properly taken care of.

One prime example of such an asset is the three-acre plot of land set aside at the Tafuna Industrial Park to construct a veterans' memorial monument.

Togiola says a committee has been appointed to oversee the construction of this project, for which 100,000 US dollars was allocated in last year's budget.
