A 62-year-old employee of the Northern Marianas Division of Youth Services has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for sexually abusing a 14-year-old girl at the shelter where he worked.

The Superior Court accepted a plea agreement with Pedro Ilo Sablan, who pleaded guilty to one count of sexual abuse of a minor in the first degree.

The Court noted that the 14-year-old girl with developmental disabilities was placed in the shelter to keep her safe from neglect, abuse, or maltreatment, yet it was at the shelter that Sablan sexually abused her.

The judge who tried the case also recognised that Sablan cooperated with the investigators and accepted responsibility.

The plea agreement means it will spare the victim from public testimony.
