Large mackerel catch draws criticism from Vanuatu Fisheries Department

There's been criticism of a huge mackerel catch at Mele village in Vanuatu.

Local reports say the biggest haul in ten years, an estimated ten thousand giant mackerel, was made recently in the shallows of Mele Beach.

Village fishers say it took them three hours to drag the net onto the beach and three trucks to deliver the catch to the market.

But the Department of Fisheries has criticised the Mele fishers saying it's the spawning season and the giant mackerel come in close to shore to lay their eggs.

The fishermen say the school was chased into the nets by predators that they also caught.
