Residents in the Northern Mariana Islands are now saving almost eleven percent in their power bills after the CNMI utilities regulation commission approved a reduction in the cost of diesel fuel.

The discount by the Commonwealth Utilities Commission came into effect last week.

The cost of diesel comprises up to eighty percent of total monthly electricity bills in the CNMI.

The Commonwealth Public Utilities Commission approved the new rate after determining that the new charge is just, reasonable, and necessary.

The eleven percent cut is expected to translate to an 8.8 percent reduction in power bills for commercial and government customers, which make up some 70 percent of the Commission's customers
