The French high commissioner to French Polynesia says an event like the Fiji coup may succeed, should a majority of the people stand behind the change.
Richard Didier made the comment in an interview with the Tahititoday blog when asked about the dictatorship in Fiji with its oppression of the media.
He says historically, for such a total overthrow to succeed, strong popular support is required.
Mr Didier also says the political leaders have to keep a cool head.
He says should a majority back the direction that is being taken, it's possible that the action will succeed, but can also derail.
Fiji's military overthrew the government in 2006.
It abolished the constitution in 2009 when it also imposed censorship while promising elections in 2014.
