The University of the South Pacific is to fund and build a campus in Solomon Islands.

The USP's vice chancellor, Professor Rajesh Chandra, told a graduation ceremony last week in Honiara that the fourth regional campus would be built in the city.

Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation reports that the USP Council has a 19 million US dollar soft loan from the Asian Development Bank for a number of developments, including campuses in Solomons and Kiribati.

Professor Chandra says usually the host government builds the campus but in this case the university will do it without seeking any contribution from the Solomons.

He says the campus could pump tens of millions of dollars into the Solomons economy.

Currently several hundred Solomon Islanders travel to Suva for university study.
