CNMI governor calls on US agency to get rid of illegal aliens

4:22 pm on 28 November 2011

The Northern Marianas' governor Benigno Fitial is calling on the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services to rid the territory of illegal aliens.

New immigration rules apply from today, though last week the federal agency announced it would grant parole under some circumstances, allowing some aliens to stay in the CNMI longer.

But Mr Fitial, who last week reacted angrily to the parole announcement, says the agency should do its job and implement the law that put the CNMI under federal immigration.

He says by getting rid of illegal aliens employment opportunities for local people will open up.

Citizenship and Immigration Services says the granting of parole is on a case-by-case basis, and eligible individuals have to apply.
