Stand in chair at Vanuatu provident fund says new appointment urgent

2:25 pm on 2 December 2011

The acting chairman of Vanuatu's National Provident Fund, Keith Hango, has called on the Prime Minister, Sato Kilman, to involve himself in the appointment of a new chair for the agency.

He says Mr Kilman should help the Minister of Finance, Moana Carcasses, to appoint the right man as soon as possible.

This comes after the Minister dismissed the former chair, Benjamin Shing, replacing him with Maurice Michel, who resigned almost immediately after an outcry over the appointment.

Mr Hango says the board lacks a quorum to make any decisions over the 13 billion vatu in contributions held by the Fund.

The Daily Post newspaper reports the Prime Minister has promised to treat the request from Mr Hango with priority to ensure a highly qualified candidate is appointed at the earliest convenience.
