Bestowal of Samoa's Mataafa paramount title challenged in court

2:52 pm on 5 December 2011

The Lands and Titles court in Samoa will start hearing tomorrow several petitions challenging the bestowal of the Mataafa paramount title to elderly heir Tupuola Lui Iosefo in May this year.

Another heir and the Minister of Justice, Fiame Naomi Mataafa, is leading a petition asking the court not to strip the title from the current holder because all factions of the extended family have unanimously endorsed Tupuola Iosefo.

However, one of the petitions against the bestowal led by an heir and Marina Schaffhausen, disagrees saying their faction was never informed of the decision.

That petition also asks the court to declare the bestowal of the Mataafa title void and the extended family to choose one from their faction to hold it.
