Fiji officials work to control spread of taro beetle

People in Fiji are being urged not to move plants and soil from areas infected with taro beetles.

Taro beetle is the single biggest threat to Fiji's multimillion dollar taro industry and was first recorded in Fiji in 1984.

The warning follows the finding of taro beetles on the island of Gau.

FBC news reports agriculture officials saying the pest has been found in several villages, posing a major threat to the whole island.

The Agriculture Department is working with the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji to try and control the spread of the pest.
