Sport: Cricket PNG targeting T20 qualifiers

11:20 am on 9 December 2011

Cricket PNG's new General Manager say the upcoming Twenty 20 World Cup qualifiers is their key focus heading into 2012.

Greg Campbell beat out more than 40 other applicants to replace Bill Leane at the helm.

He will assist new Barramundi's head coach Brad Hogg at the March qualifiers in Dubai and says they're planning on a comprehensive build-up to the event.

"We'll probably, hopefully go the ACT for five days in late February/early March, do our camp down there. We'll bring our scholarship blokes up from Melbourne - there's nine of them down there and seven or eight of them will probably be in our squad that we pick. It's an exciting time and we might have a big announcement shortly - a ex-test player might be in that 14 shortly, we're just waiting on confirmation from the ICC that he can play."

Greg Campbell says he's also keen to see their womens team regain the top ranking in the East Asia Pacific region and for the Under 19 team to continue its progress.
