Tokelau calls for all countries to embrace renewable energy

Tokelau has challenged other states at the United Nations climate change talks in Durban to follow its lead and switch entirely to renewable energy.

Tokelau has committed to producing all its own energy by September next year, using solar power and coconut oil.

The Guardian newspaper quotes the Ulu, Foua Toloa, saying if all goes to plan, the three islands of Tokelau will formally lead the world in reducing the use of fossil fuels, and be the leader in carbon emissions and renewable energy.

He says Tokelau stands to lose more than any other country because of climate change and rising sea levels.
