Australian MPs focus on gender equality during Pacific tour

1:53 pm on 13 December 2011

Australia's Parliamentary Secretary for Pacific Island Affairs, Richard Marles, is leading a group of MPs on a Pacific tour this week which will focus on gender equality.

The delegation will visit Solomon Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Tuvalu and Samoa.

The group includes Australia's Global Ambassador for Women and Girls, Penny Williams, and they will meet government leaders, women MPs and visit programmes promoting female empowerment.

Mr Marles says Australia is providing 25 million dollars over four years to Pacific Island countries for survivors of violence and prevention programmes.

The delegation will also discuss fisheries and climate change issues and, in Solomon Islands, visit Ramsi's headquarters.
