The three inhabited atolls of Tokelau have lost 55 people or 3.5 percent of their population in the past five years.

In census figures just released by Statistics New Zealand and the Tokelau Statistics Unit, the population is given as 1411 people.

The Tokelau Census Manager, Kele Lui, says understanding the demographic make-up of the population is vital for planning local services.

There was a slight increase in the number of people living on Fakaofo atoll, with decreases on Nukunonu and Atafu, which lost eight percent of its population.
