PNG public service told to defy court and support O'Neill

3:17 pm on 19 December 2011

Papua New Guinea's secretary of government says the public service will only respond to Peter O'Neill's government which is being challenged by the administration of Sir Michael Somare.

The secretary, Manasupe Zurenuoc says he accepts the fact that the Supreme Court made a ruling and restored Sir Michael as prime minister last week.

But he also says despite the court ruling, Sir Michael is not in charge of government.

Mr Zurenuoc says he has ordered department heads to meet Mr O'Neill's ministers, adding that in government it is a question of majority rules.

He made the comments at the government headquarters, Morauta House, while flanked by the police commissioner, Tom Kulunga, and the head of the defence force, Francis Agwi.
