A plastic surgeon in French Polynesia has reportedly said it could take him up to a decade to remove all the French-made breast implants in Tahiti found to be faulty and a health risk.
According to the website Tahiti Infos, a meeting has been held among health officials in Papeete to discuss the problems posed by revelations that the implants from the firm, PIP, were made with substandard gel.
The physician in question has reportedly performed more than 900 operations in Tahiti over just over a decade.
Tahiti Infos reports that nearly 200 women have had their implants removed at their own cost as discussions are under way to see if the public health care system will pay for those still seeking surgery.
Reports say there are three other surgeons in town who could remove the implants.
