The cost of power, petrol and food on Guam surged in 2011 compared to the previous year.

The Pacific News Centre reports that according to the latest Consumer Price Index report from the Bureau of Statistics and Plans, the overall CPI rose just four percent in the final quarter of 2011 compared to the same period a year ago.

But individual categories saw more dramatic increases, including eight percent for food, 34 percent for electricity, and more than 19 percent for fuel.

The report puts the US dollar's purchasing power at 0.59 of what it was in base year 1996.
