Fiji says Russia's foreign minister Sergey Lavrov is to visit Fiji, with FBC News reporting the visit is scheduled for February the 1st.

Last year, Suva strengthened its ties with Russia by appointing Isikeli Mataitoga as Fiji's first ambassador to Moscow.

The planned visit comes only months after Russia expressed interest in cooperating with Pacific Small Island Developing States.

Russia set up diplomatic ties with Tuvalu which has joined Nauru in recognising Georgia's breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia as independent states in exchange for Russian funds.

Last July, Vanuatu came out in support of Abkhazia but amid confusion within the Port Vila government the position was reversed.
