An American Samoa lawmaker is sponsoring a bill seeking to change the legal age for women to get married.
Local law states that while a male has to be at least 18 years old, a female must be at least 14.
The bill seeks to amend this provision to state that the female must be at least 17 years old.
The lawmaker, Lemapu Suiaunoa, says the current age of 14 is just too young and it should be amended as soon as possible.
If the female is less than 18 years old, she must have the consent of one of her parents or guardian.
