Higher fines eyed for speeding in CNMI

A CNMI lawmaker is proposing to increase the maximum fines for speed limit violations in the Northern Marianas by 50 percent.

The increase would raise the fine for speeding from 100 US dollars to 150 for a first offence.

The proposed fine for a second offense is 375 dollars, up from the current 250.

A Representative, Janet Maratita, says her proposal serves two main functions, to create a safer driving experience and generate revenue for the Department of Public Safety.

Under the bill, all fines and penalties collected will be transferred and deposited into a general fund account for the department's exclusive use.
