A former Fiji army colonel, Ratu Tevita Mara, says there is no terrorist threat in Fiji which he says is being used as a justification for the draconian new public order regulations put in place this month.
Ratu Tevita, who fled Fiji last year while facing sedition charges, has told Auckland's Radio Tarana that the only terrorist threat comes from the military led by Commodore Frank Bainimarama.
He alleges that the regime is poised to rig the elections promised for 2014 because it lacks support.
"If he knew he had 100 percent support, he would open everything up. Where in Fiji have people come out in support? Where have they come out in marches, banners, saying we're supporting Bainimarama? Nowhere. In fact we have people come out writing graffiti."
The interim government says the amended regulations are at preventing unrest of the kind seen in 2000 which led to the ousting of the former prime minister Mahendra Chaudhry.
