12:25 pm on 23 January 2012

The government of the Northern Marianas is warning the public against email scams using hacked email addresses.

This comes after a government employee received an email from an acquaintance requesting money becauser he was allegedly stranded in a European city.

The government says the email appears to be a variant of a known scam in which a scammer guesses or obtains an email password and then use the contacts gained.

It says the scammer is counting on the fact that recipients of the email will reply, thinking they are speaking to a friend needing money via a wire transfer.

The government advises the public that if the scam happens to them to contact the acquaintance by phone.
