Severe flood warnings are in place for major rivers in Fiji's main island of Viti Levu.

The Metservice says today's forecast for the west is periods of rain, heavy at times and occasional rain elsewhere.

A senior meterologist Amit Singh says key rivers including Ba, Nadi and Sigatoka are flooded.

"We have issued a severe flood warning for major rivers, streams and low lying areas of western Viti Levu. Ba, Nadi and Sigatoka -that's western Viti Levu."

Amit Singh says the rain is expected to ease later today but flood warnings will remain in place.

He says forecasters are expecting a wet weekend with more flooding.
