Papua New Guinea's veteran politician Sir Michael Somare says the elections due this year should not go ahead without the issues surrounding the current power struggle being resolved.
Sir Michael has reiterated that he is the legitimate prime minister despite key institutions siding with Peter O'Neill who took control last August.
In a new statement, Sir Michael says the 30 strong members of parliament backing him feel that it is not right to go to elections without restoring the supremacy of the Constitution and the rule of law.
He says the continued defiance of the O'Neill regime and its non-compliance with the Supreme Court orders of last December are contemptuous of the Supreme Court.
He says it is also irresponsible and sets a terrible trend for future governments.
