The American Samoa House of Representatives has approved a bill that imposes fines on the sponsors of immigrants who stay in the territory longer than their permits authorize .
The bill requires individual sponsors to pay $10 for each day that a person overstays their permit.
The bill levies a fine of $100 per day for corporations or business sponsors if people they sponsor do not return home at the expiration of their permits,
The bill states that due to the urgent need to curtail violations of immigration laws, it shall become effective immediately once approved by the Fono and signed into law by the governor.
The bill now goes to the Senate for review.
