Yazaki Samoa safe from job cuts

Samoa's largest private sector employer Yazaki Eds says it is not affected by the cutting of 350 jobs at Toyota Australia.

General Manager, Funefeai Oliva Va'ai told the Samoa Observer they anticipated the job losses in Australia so they made plans to ensure the impact is minimal in Samoa.

Yazaki Samoa is one of Toyota Australia's biggest component suppliers.

Funefeai said with the strengthening of the Australian dollar they forecast this to happen in October of last year, so manpower levels were adjusted accordingly.

He said their 950 employees have been told not to worry, that no one will be made redundant at this stage.

But the company is mindful of potential impacts and has warned the workers to be more cost-wary.

Toyota Australia cited dropping overseas sales as the main reason for the redundancy.
