Sport: Tongan sevens team to draw inspiration from 'Ikale Tahi in Wellington

The Tongan sevens team is drawing inspiration from the Ikale Tahi's Rugby World Cup heroics ahead of their first appearance of the season on the IRB World Series.

The Wellington leg is again being held at Westpac Stadium, the same venue where Tonga upset France in last year's World Cup.

Debutant Tomasi Palu was a part of the Ikale Tahi squad at that tournament and grew up in Wellington, where he's been a regular spectator at past sevens tournaments.

He says returning to the scene of Tonga's most famous victory is a huge inspiration for the team.

"It's a young team but there's also a lot of talent in there that just hasn't been revealed but hopefully on Friday and Saturday they let loose and show what they've got. We're not here to make the numbers, definatelty here to compete. Especially it's a privelige and honour to represent Tonga. It's a lot to do with what the 'Ikale Tahi showed against the French - that's the mentality and the heart that we have. We definately will bring our best on Friday and Saturday."

Tonga are in Pool C with Wales, Fiji and Argentina.
