MSG to support New Caledonian independence with economic activities

2:28 pm on 2 February 2012

The Director General of the Melanesian Spearhead Group says the group will continue to support New Caledonia's FLNKS in its pro-independence cause.

A delegation of the FLNKS is in Vanuatu for talks with the MSG secretariat, as a pre-cursor for an MSG mission to New Caledonia later this year.

That mission is to find out the progress of the implementation of Noumea Accord which will end in 2014.

Peter Forau says one of the key indicators of preparations towards independence is the participation of Kanak people in business activities.

"We are trying to get them to engage also with the MSG countries as part of deepening our cooperation with them, but basically, to strengthen their participation in economic activities as part of their preparation from indepence."
