New liaison post for New Caledonia's FLNKS at MSG headquarters

A new liaison post for New Caledonia's pro-independence FLNKS movement is to be set up at the Port Vila headquarters of the Melanesian Spearhead Group.

A delegation from the FLNKS has been in Vanuatu for talks with the secretariat before an MSG mission travels to New Caledonia later this year to gauge progress on the implementation of the Noumea Accord.

The Accord paves the way for self-determination in the French territory.

The MSG's Director-General, Peter Forau, says the two parties have reached a good understanding on many issues and they have agreed on a new co-ordinator role for the FLNKS within the secretariat.

"It will be basically to co-ordinate and liaise with the secretariat as well as other stakeholders to ensure the FLNKS is kept informed of what we do."

Peter Forau says the liaison officer will also provide feedback to the MSG from the FLNKS.
