Southern Vanuatu has borne the brunt of tropical Cyclone Jasmine overnight but the red alert issued by the Disaster Management Office has been downgraded.
Aneityum Island experienced destructive storm force winds of 90 kilometres an hour.
Winds of 75 kilometres an hour affected Tanna, Aniwa, and Futuna Islands in the Tafea province but are expected to ease this morning.
Heavy rainfall and flooding was also expected over the southern parts of Tafea province as well as rough seas over all open waters of Vanuatu.
The Disaster Management Office says the red alert for Tafea province has been downgraded to blue, and that only applies to Aneityum island.
Cyclone Jasmine, now a category four system is expected to drift away from Vanuatu today as the system moves further southeast with New Caledonia in its path.
As last report the cyclone was east of Mare Island in New Caledonia and is expected to continue to move southeast, and gradually weaken in the next 24 hours.
