France has dispatched a military plane from New Caledonia to help Fiji with aerial assessments of the damage caused by recent floods on Viti Levu.

The embassy in Suva says a plane with six military officers aboard was sent following a Fiji request for assistance.

It says the mission costs more than 100,000 US dollars and is being funded by the French foreign and defence ministries as well as the New Caledonian government.

The French plane is expected to return via Vanuatu which is being hit by Cyclone Jasmine.
