Fiji to announce constitution consultation details

2:23 pm on 9 February 2012

The Fiji information ministry says the Prime Minister will provide details about the timeframe and methodology of the country's constitutional consultation process in the fourth week of February.

The ministry says Commodore Frank Bainimarama will then also announce the composition of the Constitutional Commission.

Three years ago, his regime abolished the 1997 constitution and sacked the judiciary after the court of appeal ruled that his post-coup interim government was illegal.

The information ministry also says recent flooding and the continuous weather situation have created logistical complications which prevent Fijians from fully participating in the process.

Last month, it released a schedule for two weeks of consultations but withdrew it shortly afterwards.
