Sport: USA Sevens to reach record audience

12:11 pm on 9 February 2012

The USA Sevens, which kicks off in Las Vegas on Friday, is expected to reach over 220 million homes in over 110 countries.

USA coach Al Caravelli says the inclusion of rugby sevens in the 2016 Olympics has boosted interest in the sport in his country, with the prospect of medals in Rio de Janiero encouraging the US Olympic Committee to up its investment in the team.

"America is all about that and they say that the USOC is a beast of medals - it feeds on medals - and the brighter the medal, the gold, is what they feed upon. When they invest in you they expect results and that's good because now the players have a motivation, a goal they want to reach."

The USA is pooled with Wellington runners-up Fiji, Argentina and Canada

in this weekend's tournament.
