Dozens of medical personnel at the LBJ Medical Center in American Samoa will join a peace march this morning to draw the government's attention to the hospital's financial crisis.
Some 100 medical personnel and staff attended a meeting yesterday where the majority supported the march.
The hospital's financial woes have resulted in fee hikes and planned lay offs of more than 200 workers.
The group's spokesperson Dr. Mike Favazza says they aim to alert the governor of the consequences if the government continues to not pay subsidies to the hospital.
The secretary of the Medical Staff Association, Dr. Matt Tunoa, says the hospital simply doesn't have any money.
"This is the reason why the hospital has hiked the fees because there is no money coming in for us to purchase basic supplies, some of the pharmaceuticals, drugs that people need"
Dr. Matt Tunoa says enough staff will remain at the hospital to provide emergency services.
