Aitutaki in the Cook Islands is to carry out a number of beautification projects in the lead-up to this year's Pacific Islands Forum leaders' summit.

The region's leaders will be on Aitutaki and its iconic One Foot Island in mid August as part of a retreat scheduled during the summit.

The Aitutaki mayor John Baxter says One Foot Island will undergo a makeover of sorts in preparation for the retreat.

Other areas of Aitutaki which are expected to host the leaders will also undergo some beautification work, as will some roads.

A scoping team last week toured Aitutaki to recommend areas for improvement.

Mr Baxter says the Aitutaki Island Council will also be holding community meetings to complement the visits and to obtain the views of the public.

He says they recognise there is a lot of work to do.
