The Australian movie 'Murundak, Songs of Freedom' has won the top prize at the Pacific Documentary Film Festival in French Polynesia.
The public's preferred festival film however was a documentary about the late pro-independence politician Pouvanaa a Oopa, whom France sent into exile in the late 1950s after a controversial court case.
The film 'Pouvanaa, elected by the people' was made by Marie-Hélène Villierme.
Only a week ago, the French president Nicolas Sarkozy said in a televised video address to Tahitians that he is authorising the opening of the archives on Pouvanaa's file, adding that this may pave the way for a retrial and his possible rehabilitation.
