Cyclone damage prompts Vanuatu school fee exemption call

4:12 pm on 15 February 2012

Parents on Aneityum island in southern Vanuatu have asked the government to exempt them from paying school fees for the first semester of this year.

One parent, Alan Tom, says Cyclone Jasmine last week severely damaged crops and tourism sites - the two main income sources.

He says parents will find it very difficult to pay for school fees and at the same time rebuild their homes and gardens.

Mr Tom says it will also take time before parents can again earn an income.

Parents from Aneityum are also asking the government to declare the island a disaster area.

Aneityum was one of the Tafea Province islands that was declared a disaster area last year following two devastating cyclones.
