A French banking group has been given a licence to operate in Fiji.

The Fiji Reserve Bank governor, Barry Whiteside, says Bred Bank (Fiji) Ltd is part of BCPE, the second largest banking group in France.

It already has operations in other parts of the Pacific - in French Polynesia, New Caledonia and Vanuatu.

Mr Whiteside says it is expected to start operations in Fiji in September.
