The Commissioner of Fiji's Western Division, Joeli Cawaki, is warning the Ministry of Health that he will declare a Public Health Emergency, if the Ministry continues to ignore his recommendation.

Commander Cawaki wants a ban to be placed on mass gatherings and the drinking of kava in flood affected areas following further deaths due to communicable diseases.

The Ministry of Health says confirmed cases of dengue, typhoid, leptospirosis and viral diseases have not reached alarming levels.

FBC News reports Commander Cawaki is concerned that the Ministry is delaying the implementation of bans.

Commander Cawaki says the number of deaths has increased to seven.

He says if the Ministry will not take the recommendation seriously the Western Division will implement the ban itself.
