Decision on future of Samoa's old parliament house due today

7:17 am on 6 March 2012

Samoa's Parliament will decide today the fate of the old parliament house.

Cabinet had decided to demolish the old building in Mulinu'u but in a rare move, the speaker La'auli Leuatea Polataivao overruled the decision.

He ordered the building contractor to not demolish the old maota fono house until he puts the matter to parliament for discussion and a final decision.

Several members of the public have voiced disappointment of the government's decision to demolish the old building because it is part of Samoa's history of independence.

The celebrations of the country's switch to independence was held in front of the old fono house on January the 1st, 1962.
