Niue dengue outbreak eases

1:42 pm on 6 March 2012

Niue health authorities are hopeful they've contained a rare outbreak of dengue fever on the island.

Three people were reported with dengue last week, with two admitted to hospital.

A public awareness campaign was mounted to encourage people to ensure mosquito breeding sites are eliminated.

The chief medical officer, Dr Eddie Akau'ola, says there've been no further reports of infection.

"And the three cases that we have identified have been discharged from hospital, and no further case. But we will keep a good eye out for the next week until we have gone past the incubation period and then we will relax off, but we will wait until to see if there are any further developments from that."
