A group has been formed in New Caledonia to support Nicolas Sarkozy's campaign for re-election to the French presidency.

In 2007, Mr Sarkozy achieved his best score in New Caledonia, winning just under 63 percent in the second round of voting.

The leader of the Rasseblement-UMP, Pierre Frogier, says local politics will be closely linked to the personality of the next president, adding that his side needs Mr Sarkozy as he wants the territory to remain French.

The Future Together Party has also endorsed Mr Sarkozy whil the third main anti-independence party, the Caledonia Togther Party, has given its voters free choice.
